What most planners don't tell you
- Kerala has three completely different wedding settings
Backwaters, beaches and hill stations each offer a completely different experience. Kumarakom and Alleppey are for couples who want the houseboat and lagoon experience. Kovalam and Varkala are for beach ceremonies. Munnar and Wayanad are for misty hill weddings. Know which Kerala you want before you start shortlisting venues.
- Humidity is real — plan around it
Kerala's coastal areas can be humid even in peak season. Outdoor evening events are more comfortable than afternoon ceremonies. Makeup artists experienced in Kerala weddings know how to work with the climate. Choose vendors who have worked here before.
- Houseboat ceremonies need advance permissions
A houseboat ceremony on the backwaters is one of the most extraordinary things you can do at a Kerala wedding. It also requires advance permissions, careful logistics and experienced local coordination. Never leave this to the last minute.
- Vendor availability varies by region
Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have strong local vendor ecosystems. More remote backwater or hillside locations may require vendors to travel from the nearest city — adding travel and stay costs to your budget.
- Monsoon is not wedding season
June to August brings heavy rain across most of Kerala. Even partial outdoor functions become very difficult. If you are considering a Kerala wedding, October to May is the window to work within.
- The cultural elements are extraordinary — use them
Kerala's classical art forms — Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Thiruvathira — add a depth and authenticity to wedding celebrations that no choreographed performance can match. Building even one traditional element into your celebration elevates the entire experience for your guests.
